YOUNG DIRECTOR FESTIVAL
April 2

Plug and Play, NCT’s Young Director Festival for 2025, presents a feast of delights for little ones, with five brand new productions crafted by hot up-and-coming directors. The festival, funded by NAC and PESP, is designed as a platform to showcase the talented young performers that attend NCT’s workshops program, and introduce a new generation of theatre-makers, designers, musical directors, and choreographers.
Responding to the theme “Afro-futures, looking forward, looking back,” these emerging creative powerhouses imagine what the next 30 years might look like, for SA’s children.
In The Hyena’s Tuckshop, directed by Mongezi Ntukwana, the community is up in arms, when an infamous tuckshop-owning hyena’s produce is a danger to the children feasting there.
In Mapula The Rain Queen directed by Jason Tsebe, the legacy of The Rain Queen is tested when the next in line presents an unexpected challenge to tradition.
Threads of Compassion, by Aviwe Dasha, reimagines a classic folktale, The Lion and the Mouse, and in the process, Humanity is put to the test on what is just another day on the playing field.
Visits from the World of Dreams, by Ntokozo Vilakazi offers audiences a teleport pass to a land of possibilities and an endless journey of adventure, your dreams!
The Great Race, directed by Naleli Mercy, is a vibrant, child-centred exploration of resilience, fairness and Ubuntu adapted from the classic folktale of The Tortoise and The Hare.
Come and enjoy food stalls and a family-friendly day of entertainment at NCT’s Parktown campus.
